BLOOMFIELD, NJ – After serving the Township of Bloomfield with passionate dedication for over ten years, Mayor Michael Venezia officially resigned from the position, effective January 8, in order to assume his new role following his recent election as a New Jersey State Assemblyman representing the 34th District. At his last Council Meeting as Mayor, Venezia expressed his gratitude for the support he has received throughout his tenure and emphasized his eagerness to continue serving the public in his new role. Venezia will be sworn-in to the State Assembly along with other newly elected legislators in Trenton on January 9.
"It has been an immense honor to serve as the Mayor of Bloomfield, and I am grateful for the trust and support of the community," said Mayor Venezia. “The opportunity to continue serving the people of Bloomfield as their representative in the State Assembly is a responsibility I do not take lightly, and I am excited to bring our shared values to the state level and work towards a better future for all New Jerseyans.”
Elected in 2014 as the youngest mayor in the history of Bloomfield, Mayor Venezia spearheaded numerous community initiatives that enhanced the quality of life for residents and contributed to the township's continued growth and prosperity. He fought to keep property taxes stable through smart and strategic development while investing in municipal services, parks, infrastructure and community events, and implemented sustainability initiatives which reduced Bloomfield’s carbon footprint and resulted in substantial savings for residents.
Mayor Venenzia’s administration also improved public safety by reorganizing the police department and investing in training, technology, and personnel, and his office played an integral role during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic in keeping the community informed and coordinating rapid responses by healthcare providers.
Members of Venezia’s family, Township staff, and other local community members gathered at his final Council Meeting to pay tribute to the outgoing mayor a
nd wish him luck in his new endeavors. Expressing appreciation for his impact and contributions to Bloomfield, speakers commended the mayor's vision and initiatives that had shaped the community for the better.
"It has been a pleasure to serve with Mayor Venezia for the past decade and am sure he will represent Bloomfield extremely well in Trenton," said Councilman Nick Joanow. "I wish him well and look forward to working with him in his new role as State Assemblyman to continue delivering results to Bloomfield residents."
With Mayor Venezia’s resignation, the elected members of the Bloomfield Democratic Committee will meet and submit three nominations to the Township Council to fill out the remainder of the current term. Council members will consider the nominations at the next scheduled meeting on January 22.
