Statement from the Township of Bloomfield Mayor and Council

October 28, 2025 - Bloomfield, NJ - The Bloomfield Town Council is united in unequivocally condemning an ethnic slur and problematic characterization of history made by a member of the public during the October 27, 2025 Council Meeting.

During those remarks, the individual referred to Indigenous peoples as “uncivilized natives”. This language is deeply offensive and rooted in a long-disproven historical narrative. Such remarks have no place in our civic spaces and stand in direct contradiction to Bloomfield’s values of respect, inclusion, and truth.

As a governing body made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences, we stand together to affirm our unwavering commitment to inclusion and mutual respect for every resident.

We understand the individual was attempting to express pride in their cultural heritage and frustration over what they perceive as criticism of that heritage. However, advocating for one culture or history must never come at the expense of another.

We also recognize that these comments may have caused real pain to members of our community. We offer our sincere support and solidarity to those who were hurt by these remarks. Bloomfield is a community that strives to ensure all residents feel seen, valued, and respected.

At the same time, we recognize that misconceptions about historical figures are often rooted in limited education and one-sided narratives. This moment provides an opportunity for learning and reflection. History is complex, and greater understanding begins with a willingness to engage with that complexity.

The council reaffirms our dedication to anti-racism and to fostering a community where all residents feel respected and valued. We will continue to review our public meeting protocols to ensure that free speech is protected while maintaining a respectful civic environment.

For those interested in resources that support a modern understanding of history and the ways in which we value and honor voices from a multitude of cultures and experiences, please visit the Bloomfield Public Library and check out other free sources of information such as the Smithsonian Institution, which includes resources such as:

Bloomfield is, and will remain, a community that stands united against bigotry and committed to celebrating our shared diversity.

Together, we can continue to build a community rooted in understanding, respect, and shared responsibility for one another.
