Health Education

What is Public Health Education?

Public Health Education promotes healthy behaviors throughout the community by planning, implementing, and evaluating educational campaigns and programs to encourage healthy habits and environments through research and administrative work.

Health Education Division

The Health Education Division provides an array of programs, information, and activities designed to encourage and support a healthy lifestyle: a farm-fresh produce market, yoga and meditation classes, bike and walking groups, lead poisoning education and resources, community programs addressing issues such as mental health, substance abuse (including smoking and alcohol), and bullying, and numerous others.

Programs are often coordinated with other agencies, including City Green, New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition, EZ Ride, Essex County’s ADAPT (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team), the Bloomfield Municipal Alliance Committee, Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville, University Hospital in Newark, and many more.

Together, we work to promote the health and well-being of the community by offering connections, resources, and support focusing on:

  • Stress reduction
  • Chronic disease management including HIV/AIDS
  • Alcohol and drug abuse
  • Smoking prevention and cessation
  • Injury prevention and control
  • Healthy eating
