Retail Food Establishment Inspections

The Bloomfield Health Department is committed to ensuring the safety of food served at our local restaurants, cafes, and markets. We achieve this through regular inspections of retail food establishments.

Inspections:

It is conducted twice a year (semi-annually) and is based on Chapter 24 of the New Jersey State Sanitary Code and local regulations.

Inspection Outcome:

Following the inspection, a placard is posted at the establishment reflecting its compliance:

Satisfactory (White Placard with Black Border):

This indicates the establishment meets all sanitary regulations, with only minor violations needing correction before the next inspection.

Conditionally Satisfactory (Yellow Placard):

This means some violations were found, but they don't pose an immediate health risk. The establishment has 30 days to address these issues, with a follow-up inspection to ensure compliance.

Unsatisfactory (Red Placard):

Serious violations posing a direct threat to public health were identified. The establishment is urged to close voluntarily for immediate correction. Refusal to comply may result in legal action to force closure until violations are rectified.

Foodborne Illness Investigations:

The department also investigates reports of foodborne illnesses and general food complaints to maintain food safety standards.

Food Safety Training:

The Bloomfield Health Department prioritizes educating food establishment personnel. We offer classes on safe food handling practices. To register for these classes, please email or call 973-680-4024.
