November 16, 2015 Released By: Karen Lore, Department of Health and Human Services

phab-seal.gifThe national Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) announced it has awarded five-year accreditation status to the Bloomfield Department of Health and Human Services, the first health department in New Jersey to earn this status.

To receive accreditation, the Department had to undergo a rigorous, multi-faceted, peer-reviewed assessment process to ensure meeting or exceeding a set of quality standards and measures set by PHAB. Requirements included conducting a Community Health Assessment, a Community Health Improvement Plan (C.H.I.P), Strategic Plan as well as Quality Improvement and Performance Management Plans. Staff was tasked with serving on committees and providing input to meet nearly 100 measures. “As a relatively small local health department with limited funding and resources, employees were challenged to bring all of their diverse skills forward to work in a variety of roles to accomplish tasks. We were also fortunate to have support from the Partners for Health Foundation who helped us launch our Community Health Needs Assessment, a first step in the accreditation process,” said Karen Lore, Director of Health and Welfare. “Our community partners, the Board of Health, Township employees and officials have encouraged and supported us from the beginning in accomplishing this goal, taking several years to complete” Lore stated.

Mike Fitzpatrick, Bloomfield Health Officer commented, “We look forward to providing the highest level of Public Health Services to our residents, and our Inter-Local Service Communities, as well as sharing our experience and knowledge about the accreditation process with our Public Health Colleagues.”

PHAB is the independent accreditation organization which aims to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of the nation’s tribal, state, local, and territorial health departments. The national accreditation program sets standards against which more than 3,000 public health departments can continuously work to improve the quality of their services and performance.

“This is an outstanding achievement and recognitionaccredited.jpg of the Bloomfield Department of Health and Human Service commitment to prevent disease and promote health and wellness among its residents. The journey has been long, but the process has been well worth the effort. As a result, the Department is now positioned as a leader in the area of public health in New Jersey meeting the highest of standards. I am so very impressed with our staff and their commitment to excellence,” stated Lore.

The Bloomfield Department of Health and Human Services provides public health and social services to Bloomfield residents with inter-local contracts with Caldwell, Glen Ridge, Mountain Lakes, West Milford and Lincoln Park.
