Booksales are held periodically throughout the year. Watch for publicity about the sale within the library and in the Independent Press or Bloomfield Life Newspapers. Used books are available for purchase in the front lobby of the library throughout the year:
Hardcovers: $1.00,
Trade Paperbacks: $.50.

Historical Society Museum

The Historical Society of Bloomfield, New Jersey is a group of dedicated volunteers who promote interest in the rich history of Bloomfield and seek to preserve the remnants of that history. They sponsor, staff and maintain the Historical Museum with it's displays and showcases. Your webmaster spent a very pleasant afternoon there recently and highly recomends a visit to this small gem of a museum, located at 90 Broad Street, in the Children's Wing of the Bloomfield Public Library. Currently, the Museum is open on Wednesdays from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and by appointment. After Labor Day, 2002, the Historical Society will also be open 10AM to 12:30PM on Saturday mornings. Admission is free.

Poetry Club


Poets and lovers of poetry are invited to join the Poetry Club, sponsored by the Bloomfield Public Library. The Poetry Club meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, in the Conference Room, from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. Check the

The Book Discussion Group


The Book Discussion Group picks a different work each month. Such books as Carn, by Patrick McCabe, and Ship Fever by Andrea Barrett have been discussed in the past. All are welcome. For details concerning time, date and books under discussion, check the

Literacy/English as a Second Language


Sponsored by the
Literacy Volunteers of America, Newark and Essex County, Inc. Individual literacy tutoring for those wishing to learn English or to learn to read. Registration is required. To become a student or a Volunteer teacher, or for more information, contact the Literacy Volunteers at 973-733-9404 or 973-275-2300 . ESL books in the library can be found at the call number 428. There are also videos and audio tapes available. Search the library catalog or call the Information Desk at 973-566-6211 or 973-566-6210.

Spanish Language Books in the Bloomfield Public Library

The Bloomfield Public Library has a small collection of Spanish Language books. To find out what we have:

There are many more books available at The Newark Public Library by use of your ReBL card. The Newark Public Library also has other services available for Spanish speakers, some of which may be unavailable for Bloomfield residents. Search ¡Informe! Russian Language Books in the Bloomfield Public Library

The library also borrows a small collection of Russian language books from the Newark Public Library. These are in the library for a period of about three months, at which time they are returned to the Newark Public Library and a new set of books are received. Russian language books may only be taken out by Bloomfield residents with valid Bloomfield Public Library cards. For more information, call 973-566-6211 or ask at the Information Desk in the library. You can also apply at the Circulation desk for a ReBL card, which will allow you to borrow Russian Language books directly from the large collection of Russian Language books available at the The Newark Public Library.

Library for the Blind and Handicapped

The New Jersey Library for the Blind and Handicapped provides free audiocassette books and cassette players for state residents of all ages who need them. If you are legally blind, dyslexic, or unable to turn pages in a printed book, you may be eligible for this service. You do not need to be a Bloomfield resident or totally blind to qualify. Ask at the Information Desk for an application or additional information about library services for the visually impaired. Computer Classes


The library offers free computer classes to all Bloomfield residents.
Welcome to the Web class consists of a series of five classes aimed at instructing new users in basic computer skills and how to search the internet to find information. In addition, a one-session class teaches the use of web-based Email. Call 973-566-6211 for more information on these programs.

Interested in learning more about computers and searching the web on your own? The Internet is an excellent source of technical training. The following is a list of websites which offer tutorials on mouse skills, E-mail, and the basics of using a computer. The Library Theatre is the site of many musical programs, films, lectures, and children's programs. The Theatre is barrier-free. Special events such as the Performing Arts Series are programmed each month, and schedules are subject to change. The Bloomfield Independent Press and Bloomfield Life are also good sources of information on Library news and programming.

Performing Arts Series
A series of programs featuring music and topics of interest to the Bloomfield community are held each year between October and May. Past programs have featured the Big Apple Jazz Band, An American Songbook with baritone, Phillip Mentor, and Unlacing the Victorian Woman with costume/fashion designer Barbara Darlin. All programs are advertised through fliers distributed in the library and notices in the local newspapers.

Children's Programming
Children's movies and special events are held in the theatre. Check the calendar or the schedule of events. Past programs have included the New York Aquarium. In a repeat performance of "Underwater Cities" - a representative from the New York Aquarium demonstrated aquatic life using video, puppets, and live specimens! Space is limited and programs fill up quickly.
