Communicable
diseases are those diseases which can pose
a potential health hazard to other individuals
as well as the patient. N.J.A.C. 8:57-1.6
lists specific diseases that must be reported
to local health departments. Based on the
disease, follow up is made with the treating
physician, sometimes the patient, and then
forwarded to the New Jersey State Department
of Health and Senior Services. For further
information about communicable diseases go
to www.state.nj.us/health/cd/index.html

Children
between the ages of one and five are susceptible
to getting lead poisoning. The reason is these
age groups tend to place objects and items
in their mouth. Lead can be found in paint
and dirt in older homes. Lead poisoning can
cause hyperactivity and lead to mental retardation
and brain damage. Lead screenings are offered
through the Nursing Division for a nominal
fee. An appointment is required. To learn
more about lead poisoning go to www.cdc.gov/nceh/lead/lead.htm

The
Nursing Division offers tuberculosis skin
testing for a fee of $10.00. This testing
requires two appointments. The first one is

the results. People working in schools, day
cares, and home health agencies are mandated
by the state to have a tuberculin skin test.
Also, children attending school, arriving
from another country need a tuberculin skin
test. For more information regarding tuberculosis

A
state-wide perinatal hepatitis registry is
maintained by the New Jersey State Department
of Health and Senior Services to identify
and follow up on positive Hepatitis B pregnant
women and their household contacts. The Nursing
Division participates in this program. Upon
receipt of notification of a pregnant resident
that meets this criteria, a public health
nurse contacts the woman and conducts necessary
follow up. This ensures that the baby and
contacts are immunized, thereby protecting
them from contracting hepatitis B. The Centers
for Disease Control offers a website with
information on perinatal hepatitis B.
