CURBSIDE RECYCLING REGULATIONS
Set your recycling at the curb prior to 5 a.m. on your collection day BUT NO EARLIER than 6 p.m. the evening before.
COMMINGLED (mixed materials): These include glass bottles, aluminum cans,
tin cans and plastic containers with #1 and #2 recycling logos on
bottom (i.e. soda, water, milk, juice and detergent bottles).
NO WINDOW GLASS, NO MIRRORS, NO MOTOR OIL OR ANTIFREEZE
CONTAINERS.
MIXED
PAPER: Includes newspaper, office paper, school paper,
envelopes, mixed junk mail, magazines, paperback books and phone
books, brown bags and cardboard. Effective
April 1, 2005 newspapers can be mixed with other papers, magazines
and cardboard.
USED CLOTHING: Drop off bins for used clothing are located at all Township Firehouses except Fire Headquarters. Residents are urged to recycle their used and unwanted clothing.
MOTOR OIL and TIRES: Used motor oil and used tires should also be properly recycled. Many area gas stations and tire dealers will accept the used materials for a nominal fee. Contact the dealer in your area to make sure that they can recycle these materials.
APPLIANCES WITH FREON: The Federal Clean Air Act Law requires the removal of all Freon to help prevent the further deterioration of the Ozone Layer. In purchasing new household appliances containing Freon such as refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, freezers, water coolers, etc, residents should purchase new appliances from appliance stores that will take old units free of charge.
QUESTIONS: Please contact the Department of Public Works at (973) 680-4127.
DIRECTIONS: The Department of Public Works Recycling Depot is located at 230 Grove Street in Bloomfield and is open every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to accept recyclable materials. You can access Grove Street off of Bloomfield Avenue (Wendy's Restaurant at that intersection) and also from Watsessing Avenue (at new NJ Trasit Station).
GARBAGE REGULATIONS
Please note that solid waste receptacles or bulky waste should not be placed on the curb prior to 6:00 p.m. on the day preceding the scheduled collection day or later than 5:30 a.m. on the scheduled collection day.
Curb is emphasized to insure that the trash/garbage is not placed in the streets as this presents a safety hazard and hindrance to our street sweeping personnel.
No receptacle shall be permitted to remain at the curb longer than two (2) hours in any commercial or business area after its collection.
No residential receptacle shall be permitted to remain at the curb longer than twenty-four (24) hours after being set out for collection.
Failure to comply with the above, shall result in a summons being issued.

GRASS
CLIPPINGS, BRANCHES
and LEAVES
Under a new "Cut It and Leave It" program, the Township now encourages you to cut your grass and leave it on the lawn to help fertilize it and retain moisture. This process is also known as "Grasscycling", meaning a natural recycling of grass clippings. Grasscycling saves time and money, as you no longer have to purchase and fill biodegradable bags for grass, the lawn stays healthier, it lowers your need to fertilize by up to 30%, and it reduces the trucking and resulting fuel use and pollution for collecting the bags. For more information, see our Grasscycling page. Landscapers are also encouraged to grasscycle properly.
Township
regulations require that brush,
branches, yard rakings and other vegetative matter be placed in
biodegradable bags only for collection by the
Township.
Landscapers
are required to conform to these requirements.
Pickups
will be made on the same day as recycling pickups.
Leaves
shall be placed in biodegradable bags only for
curbside pickup by the Township during the periods of October
1 through December 15 and April 1 through May 15 of each
year.
Biodegradable bags with leaves will not be picked up during the Winter months (Jan. 1 - Mar.31). Instead, Christmas trees will be picked up (in January) and the repair of potholes and other work will be performed during this period.
Soft vegetative waste collection will resume in the Spring.
Landscapers
are required to conform to these regulations
